Q.) As an RDFI, how long do we need to hold on to a DNE?
A.)
The ACH Rules call for participating Depository Financial Institutions (DFIs) to retain a record of each entry for six years from the date the entry was transmitted. This includes Death Notification Entries (DNEs). Additionally, the RDFI must be able to provide a printout or reproduction of the information relating to the entry upon request from the account holder, ODFI or ACH Operator (Nacha Operating Rules, Article One, Section 1.4, page OR3). For your convenience, a Document Retention Schedule is also included in the 2021 Nacha Operating Guidelines on page OG333.
