What is the EPN network in ACH?
The EPN network is The Clearing House’s ACH service for clearing and settling electronic ACH debit and credit transactions through batch processing cycles.

Who can participate in the EPN service?
The EPN service is available to U.S. Depository Financial Institutions (DFIs) as forth in the EPN Rules, including banks and credit unions, that originate and/or receive ACH payments. It is purpose-built for high-volume originating and receiving institutions that need predictable performance, operational flexibility, and responsive support.

Do Financial Institutions need to be an owner of The Clearing House to participate?
No. Participation to the EPN network is open to DFIs and does not require ownership in The Clearing House.

Does The Clearing House support Same Day ACH?
Yes. The EPN network provides three same-day settlement windows each business day with settlement at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ET for eligible Same Day ACH transactions.

What is a UPIC® and why is it used?
A UPIC® (Universal Payment Identification Code) is a unique account identifier that can be shared for receiving ACH credit payments only (excluding debit payments) without exposing confidential bank account information.

What are the ODFI and RDFI in an ACH transaction?
- ODFI: Originating Depository Financial Institution (the originator's financial institution)
- RDFI: Receiving Depository Financial Institution (the receiver’s financial institution)

What are the governance rules of the EPN system?
EPN is governed by the EPN Membership and Operating Rules maintained by The Clearing House. These rules incorporate the Nacha Operating Rules, while also including EPN-specific provisions and modifications that apply to EPN participants and operations.
